Day Twenty-four – Acebo to Ponferrada

Acebo is a lovely little pueblo – the view from my balcony this morning.

Short walk today – placement of villages kept us from going more than 10 miles. Frustrating to some degree – at the same time we found a very lovely city and we have a little time to explore. A city with a castle! Hopefully we’ll make our way up there.

Our descent from Acebo was, well, brutal. On the knees and ankles. Not just because it is steep, but walking nearly 2 hours around big rocks! How we make it down w/o serious injury is remarkable. You can’t take your eyes off the path for a moment! One wrong step, and it could be impossible to continue.

The goal for the day – find a Saturday night vigil Mass so we can leave early in the morning. Coming in to a pueblo or city, every day, I’m praying the St Joseph novena – begging for his prayers for good safe lodging. First stop today – the Farmacia! My ankles need some help! They were so kind and helpful. “Oh, by the way, would you know where we can find Mass tonight?”  (A vigil Mass is not as common as it is a home) “Oh, 8:00 I think! At the Basilica.”  We continue on the Camino, and I see an older gentleman. I’ll ask him where the Basilica is. No…HE came up to US! “Where are you going?” After giving us directions, I asked if he knew if there was Mass tonight. “7:30…no, 8:00.”

We continue into town and not only find a medieval castle, but two lovely city volunteer guides who want very much to help us (and practice their English) and answer any question we might have! So there we go. All showered, went off to fine a local laundromat.

We always prefer a larger lunch than dinner, so found a quaint little restaurant and had probably the best meal in our 24 days on the Camino.  The cheesecake was divine!

Then to the supermarket for fresh snacks for tomorrow, and now just resting before Mass tonight. As always, tenderly cared for.
