Day Twelve – San Juan de Ortega to Burgos

This is what happens when pilgrims arrive late! Not enough time for socks to dry! It’s amusing – so many pilgrims have socks hanging from their packs to dry in the sun as they walk!

16 miles today! Greetings from the Land of the  Ladybugs! Really – they’re everywhere!
We started out today in very cool weather. It was misty. It was chilly. It was rocky. It was hilly. It was eerie.

This is what we found (look very closely – see the cross? Wait for it…)

At one point we heard the bells, then we heard the bleating, and soon we saw a massive flock of sheep coming down the mountain – in our direction!

The constants here? Early morning wake up. Tortilla. 2-3 cafes con leche. A ham and cheese sandwich. Good bread! A full plate of potatoes. At least one croissant per day. Yes, I realize that this is an extraordinary time. We can and need to eat! My snack of choice for an energy boost is dried and candied pineapple.

I had an amazing visit with a distant cousin! Yes – more tears of joy.
